About the SRS
The railways of Scandinavia have attracted many admirers, not least for their settings in charming countries, with operations in most delightful landscapes ranging from dramatic mountains, past forests and lakes, over spectacular bridges and through rolling countryside to the famous and historic capital cities of Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm.
Each of the railways has developed its own unique engineering and design characteristics, in some cases absorbing and adapting British, German, American and other influences. This provides an extensive range of motive power and rolling stock from the earliest steam days through to modern diesel and electric times. Other operational features, including single track main lines, train ferries and curious signalling systems (to British eyes, anyway), provide an abundant fascination and interest to those who discover what Scandinavia has to offer.
The Scandinavian Railways Society was formed in 1993 for the benefit of the growing numbers of enthusiasts and modellers of Scandinavian railways who want an English language focus for their interests.
We are an informal and friendly society, and have members throughout the world, including Scandinavia. Because we are an international group, our quarterly journal called “Skandiapilen” after a train of that name, is the principle means of keeping members in touch and informed, with regular news, features and members’ Sales/Wants, Information exchange, plus Book/Video/Model/other reviews. A membership directory is also published to enable members to get in touch with each other.
As well as this website, we are building a library and photo-archive. We intend to develop other member services, including information guides and supplier discounts. The society is keen to hear if there is anything that members particularly want and active participation and contribution of all members is invited.
Our Objectives:
The SRS regularly has a stand at model railway exhibitions and other railway events.
The display normally includes Scandinavian models, photos, videos, brochures and other informations.
